Summary

  • Order is for the hydrometallurgical refinery plant to complete Mercedes-Benz’ lithium-ion battery recycling facility
  • Contract covers the fabrication, installation and commissioning of Stage 2 of the integrated facility
  • Award is validation of the efficacy and scalability of Primobius` technology

Primobius has received the official purchase order from Mercedes-Benz for the hydrometallurgical refinery plant (Stage 2) for its lithium-ion battery recycling facility. This milestone completes Primobius’ contractual arrangements relating to the construction of the pilot plant, currently being built at the Mercedes-Benz site in Kuppenheim, Germany.

Primobius is responsible for the engineering, equipment supply, and installation of the complete 2,500 tpa fully integrated, 2-stage recycling plant for Mercedes-Benz. Both parties will also jointly conduct R&D activities. Stage 2 is designed to match the capacity required to process intermediate feed material generated from the front-end stage (Stage 1).

This award is testament to the efficacy and scalability of Primobius’ sustainable technology to meet the needs of global OEMs generally and the automotive industry more specifically.

Dr. Michel Siemon, Primobius CEO says: “The joint project shows that we have developed the right solution for the market and underlines our ability to supply plant and offer technology licenses to OEMs to retain their battery materials from scrap and end-of-life batteries. We see ourselves as enablers of sustainable outcomes, for all stakeholders in the value chain. We are bridging the gap between industries wanting to put used batteries back into circulation and those that want to make new lithium-ion batteries. We are proud to partner with Mercedes in its journey to lead the closed-loop recycling of lithium batteries.”

Primobius is the result of a joint venture partnership between Australian Stock Exchange listed company Neometals Ltd. and private German engineering and technology company, SMS group. Primobius is to commercialize advanced recycling technology, offering a unique and sustainable method for recovering valuable lithium, nickel, cobalt and other materials from expended and scrap electric vehicles and consumer electronics LiB’s. Recovered and refined product materials will be reformed and re-applied back into the battery supply chain.
