Recharge and Recycle
The Primobius recycling process recovers the main active materials of lithium-ion-batteries in a small-footprint, environmentally friendly and sustainable manner such that these materials can be reused in manufacturing battery cathode.
A lithium-ion-battery is a rechargeable battery made up of an anode, cathode, separator, electrolyte, and two current collectors, all of which are enclosed within an outer casing.
Plastic (PE, PP)
The microporous plastic separator materials are commonly made from polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP), which are readily recycled. These plastics are recovered and supplied to plastics recycling companies.
The high-value steel casing materials that maintain the structural integrity of the batteries and afford chemical resistance and corrosion protection are recovered and supplied to metals recycling companies.
The anode current collectors have a substrate of copper foil are also recovered and supplied to metals recycling companies.
The cathode current collectors have a substrate of aluminium foil are also recovered and supplied to metals recycling companies.
Lithium-ion-batteries that will be recycled by Primobius include batteries with lithium cobalt oxide (LCO), lithium nickel cobalt manganese oxide (NCM) and lithium nickel cobalt aluminium oxide (NCA) cathode chemistries. The valuable metals contained within these cathodes, including cobalt, nickel, and lithium, are recovered as high-purity crystalline chemicals that can be supplied as raw materials back into the LIB supply chain.
Other valuable sulphate products from the Primobius recycling process include manganese sulphate, copper sulphate and ammonium sulphate. These products are suitable for industrial and agricultural applications.
Cobalt sulphate – battery grade
It is suitable as a raw material for precursor cathode active materials used in the manufacture of lithium-ion batteries.
Nickel sulphate – battery grade
Is a high purity crystalline nickel sulphate hexahydrate with very low levels of impurities.
Ammonium sulphate is commonly used as a fertilizer or in blends where it contributes the key nutrients, nitrogen and sulphur.
Manganese sulphate solution
Manganese sulphate is used as a fertilizer and as a livestock supplement where soils are manganese deficient.
Lithium sulphate solution
Lithium sulphate solution is a precursor material for lithium hydroxide monohydrate, a raw material used in the manufacture of lithium-ion-batteries.
Copper sulphate is commonly used as a fungicide, algicide and herbicide.
The graphite anodes are recovered in the form of a graphitic residue that can be further processed to yield high quality graphite and potentially reused in lithium-ion battery anodes.
